sublime ugliness
Essere eclissati dai propri allievi è il destino di tutti i maestri. Leggendo la biografia di Lisette Model si ha l’impressione che diventi fotografa quasi per caso, spinta da altri e che l’essere stata l’insegnante di Diane Arbus sia la nota più meritevole del suo percorso artistico. In realtà è lecito domandarsi se la luce della Arbus sarebbe la stessa senza quella di Lisette Model. È lei la prima a oltrepassare il confine, a entrare in intimità con la bruttezza fino a farne un soggetto sublime. Il suo sguardo è acuto, coglie momenti lasciati nascosti, contraddizioni passate inosservate. Un’ ironia tenera e senza schemi è la sua cifra stilistica più personale, che forse nessun allievo ha ereditato in pieno, attraverso la quale è riuscita a esplorare la solitudine e la fragilità e a sopravvivere.

To be eclipsed by its students is the fate of all teachers. Reading the biography of Lisette Model you get the impression that she become a photographer almost by accident, driven by others and that being the teacher of Diane Arbus is the more deserving mark of her artistic career. In fact one wonders if the light of Arbus would be the same without Lisette Model’one. She is the first to cross the border, to enter into intimacy with ugliness, turning it into a sublime subject. Her eye is sharp, it captures moments left hidden, contradictions gone unnoticed. A tender irony outside the norms it’s her more personal signature style, that perhaps no student has completely inherited, through which she is able to explore the loneliness and the fragility and to survive.
